Messert Ethiopia owns a small house in Burayoo that is home for 12 orphans between the ages of 7 and 17, children who would otherwise be alone on the streets in search of food. With Messert Ethiopia, these children have a safe place to live, school and sports activities, and a loving family who cares for them.
Many children have a parent (or in some cases two parents) but their families are destitute. These children are unable to attend school without money for school fees and uniforms. Messert Ethiopia has a sponsorship program that helps children in the poorest areas of Addis Ababa attend school. The sponsorship program covers the cost of fees and uniforms and provides for books and educational materials, medical care, recreational activities, and family financial assistance. Sponsorship for a child is $110 every six months.
An important part of the Messert Ethiopiaprogram is the after-school program that includes one hot meal a day for six days a week, tutors to assist with homework, and a library day on Saturdays.
Plans are being made to develop a drop-in center where the children can shower, wash their clothes, play indoor and outdoor games, watch television and use a computer, and where parents can get training in parenting and life skills.
